Health of the Chesapeake Bay Declines

After all the promises made by leaders around the region to realize a healthy Chesapeake Bay by 2010, it doesn't seem to be happening. According to new research by the U.S. Geological Survey, pollution is increasing in some of the bay's tributaries. And this week the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released its annual report on the health of the bay. In summary, it states that in spite of all the efforts, the health of the bay is declining. Wednesday marked the annual Chesapeake Executive Council meeting – attended by the governors of Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, DC's mayor, the Administrator of the U.S. EPA and the chair of the Chesapeake Bay Commission. Also on hand was Chesapeake Bay Foundation President, Will Baker. He joins us from Annapolis to talk about the gathering and the annual report.

Pre-K For All

There are nearly four thousand three- and four-year-olds in DC. About half of them are enrolled in pre-Kindergarten programs. And now there's a plan to expand Pre-K to accommodate every child. It also mandates uniform standards and accreditation. DC Council Chair Vincent Gray is expected to announce the proposal on Tuesday. Shia Levitt spoke with education advocates about the plan and stopped by a local classroom to learn more about pre-K in DC.

"The Eight"

DC is one of the cities taking part in a world-wide series of Hanukah concerts, all happening tomorrow, December 8th. From New York to L.A., Tel Aviv to Sydney, the coordinated concerts, called "The Eight" for the number of days in the celebration, shine a spotlight on young Jewish talent. Stephanie Kaye met with DC coordinator Michelle Weiner at the 6th & I Synagogue downtown – the location for the District concert.

Dining Out With House Guests

Between Thanksgiving and the parade of holidays clogging the calendar in December, we often find ourselves with extra house guests around this time of year. And even though many of these holidays revolve around cooking a big meal at HOME, you can't sit in the house forever. When you have relatives visiting from out of town, you want to get out there and let them experience the best food DC has to offer. Of course, with a big group that can get very expensive very fast. City Paper food writer Tim Carman joins us to talk about interesting family dining options around the region that don't have to break the bank.
