Local organizations support individuals with special needs

Raising a child can be challenging in the best of circumstances, but for some families, children are born with special needs or disabilities that present a new set of challenges. Several local organizations work to support these children and their families.

United Cerebral Palsy of Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia is an organization serving individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. United Cerebral Palsy seeks to advance the independence, productivity, and quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families. A program called Experiences Unlimited provides adults with developmental disabilities with meaningful community participation. Other services include health, assistive technology, community services, and a Medicaid waiver program.

Easter Seals Greater Washington-Baltimore Region provides exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities. Services and resources include senior and adult day services, child development centers, therapy, and respite centers. In fact, their Intergenerational Respite Services connects an older adult volunteer with a child with a disability and/or special need, to provide friendship and critically needed respite support to their families. Headquartered in Silver Spring, MD, the organization always welcomes volunteers.
